Developmental music sessions for ASN Schools
The intuitive approach to music-making that characterises all of our work at engagewithmusic is especially appropriate and effective in settings where students require a more nuanced approach to learning.
For each ASN setting we work in, a bespoke programme of sessions is devised around the needs, preferences and abilities of each student.
When group music-making is not appropriate, one-to-one or small group activities may include:
- Playing rhythm games
- Learning to play a favourite song together
- Creating music for a favourite story or video game character
- Simple improvisation on a chosen instrument
- Drumming
… or a host of pupil-led interactive music-making techniques (acquired from years of experience working with a broad spectrum of ASN participants).
We may also use recorded music as a stimulus and include some pupil-led digital sound recordings that could lead to the creation of a podcast to share.
Whatever approach we choose, it will be reactive to pupil’s needs and abilities as well as collaborative with teaching staff to support the pupils’ developmental stages and learning agenda.
A typical half-day session will include a mix of:
- larger group sessions (singing, games and sound-led stories),
- working with smaller groups of 2 or 3 pupils (playing instruments, creating soundscapes) and
- one-to-one sessions with individual pupils
