For Families

Hello and welcome to the parent and carers’ section of engagewithmusic!

For the last 20 years I have been making music with nursery and primary age children in school settings across central Scotland. In fact, there’s a good chance that I have visited your child’s school already, because I work with more than 500 children each week in music sessions across the regions.

The projects I deliver, such as Music and Me and Wee Story, Big Sound are devised to use music as a tool to stimulate, enhance and support learning in the classroom…as well as to make music a fun experience that will continue to be a meaningful part of the children’s lives for years to come!

Young children’s enjoyment of music is profound – a natural way to express themselves and to relate to others.

It can form a huge part of their creative play.

Children also sense a deep emotional connection with music…they know when the music means something.

Oh…and it’s great fun as well!

We have developed this website to share some of the ideas, studies and literature that explain this connection with music.

We’ll also be introducing many of the games, stories and songs that we use in my classroom visits, so that you can join in, use and adapt them at home.

I’m convinced that you will really enjoy sharing all the activites, stories and characters with your child.

My work in schools is funded by Local Authority Education and Arts departments, Creative Scotland and directly by the Scottish Government through its Youth Music Initiative programme… and so carries with it an obligation to provide value-for-money!

As a result, the work is constantly monitored and evaluated for effectiveness.

The evidence is pretty comprehensive that introducing music across the curriculum can really make a positive impact on concentration, engagement, creativity and enjoyment for all children….and for their adults too!

Enjoy!
